Check Out The Underground Bingo Hall
It is fairly common that bingo has played a massive role in the lives of many people in the past few decades in the United Kingdom. Even though the attendance numbers at bingo halls are diminishing rapidly these days, it wasn’t that long ago those bingo halls were experiencing a boom town up and down the nation. This means that there are a lot of people with brilliant stories and memories from their times playing bingo and even if the halls are no longer present, the memories still live in.
Glasgow was a bingo loving city
This can be seen in a number of projects in local communities where the life of local people is highlighted. There is a growing trend towards nostalgia and anything which represents the past in an artistic fashion is likely to be well received. Glasgow is a city with a huge artistic scene and it is no surprise that bingo plays a massive role in an upcoming exhibition that is running in the city during the month of February. The Red Road flats were one of the most striking images of the Glasgow high rise era and a large amount of people made these multi-storey towers their home. Given that the flat are to be demolished the Glasgow Housing Association decided to pull together a project looking at life in the Red Road flats and one of the most striking aspects was an underground bingo venue.
The original underground bingo club
The underground bingo hall was found below one of the car parks for the multi-storeys and had a capacity of 1,000 people. It says a lot that the hall was quite often filled beyond this capacity point as people clamoured to play their favourite game. The bingo bus was a common scene in Glasgow in the 60s, 70s and 80s but for residents of the Red Road flats, there was no need to worry about catching the bingo bus. They had a perfectly functioning bingo hall right on hand!
The exhibition features a lot of images of the hall taken in the last few years, long after the last game of bingo was played in the early 1990s. This exhibition is set to be a trip down memory lane for the hundreds and thousands of people who enjoyed the bingo facilities at the Red Road flats. If you are in Glasgow and have bingo memories, this is an exhibition you need to see.
