Bingo Benefits From Community Group Award

A sense of local spirit and community has never been more important than it should be today and it is good to see that many people, groups and even businesses are still working towards bringing people together. There is a lot to be said for spending time with others and seeing how other folk in your area are getting on and it is nice that hard-working groups are rewarded for the work that they do in bringing people together.

Bingo can bring people together

It is fairly obvious that bingo is a game that can bring people together so it is no surprise to learn that one group of community award winners have bingo at the heart of what they do. The Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales provides grants for local community groups that are seen to be making a difference in their local community. The great work carried out by the South Derbyshire Forum is fairly obvious to most who come into contact with the work and the grant of £17,700 will go a long way to ensuring the Forum can continue to provide the same level of service and support to those that need it most.

The group was originally set up to provide support for over 50s in the area but it was decided there was a need to bring support to more in the local area. This led to a change of focus with everyone being catered for.

Mrs Farrington of the South Derbyshire Forum said: “Our activities include IT classes and a singing group primarily for people with throat problems, COPD, and asthma because it teaches them to breathe properly. We have line dancing which is getting bigger, the knit and knatter group which brings people, particularly, from Castle Court Nursing Home, together, but we are always looking for more people.”

Bingo is always a big draw

When asked about the biggest draw for the group, Mrs Farrington replied; “We have bingo every week which is a packed house, quiz nights, day trips.” With bingo being one of the most popular activities put on by the club, there is likely to be some focus of improving the games or making the more enjoyable with the funding. Of course, with bingo being so popular, there doesn’t appear to be much need to dabble with what is working with the bingo evenings but there is always room for improvement.
